How it is calculated
- Ordinary hourly rate = monthly wage ÷ hours in a month (48 × 52 ÷ 12 = 208, or the figure you enter).
- Overtime pay = hourly rate × 2 × overtime hours.
- Punjab public holiday work: hourly rate × 3 × hours.
Example (Punjab): a monthly wage of Rs 52,000, 10 hours of overtime in the month and 4 hours worked on a public holiday. The hourly rate is Rs 250. Overtime comes to Rs 5,000 and the holiday work to Rs 3,000, a total of Rs 8,000. In an Islamabad factory, 10 hours of overtime alone would be Rs 5,000.
Overtime per hour by monthly wage (208-hour month)
| Monthly wage | Ordinary hourly | Overtime (2×) | Punjab holiday (3×) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs 37,000 | Rs 177.88 | Rs 355.77 | Rs 533.65 |
| Rs 50,000 | Rs 240.38 | Rs 480.77 | Rs 721.15 |
| Rs 75,000 | Rs 360.58 | Rs 721.15 | Rs 1,081.73 |
| Rs 100,000 | Rs 480.77 | Rs 961.54 | Rs 1,442.31 |
The law sets a minimum; if your contract pays more, that applies. Under the factories laws, the government may fix equivalent time rates for piece-rate workers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the overtime rate in Pakistan?
Twice the ordinary rate of pay. The Factories Act 1934 (s.47) and the Sindh Factories Act 2015 (s.68) pay double for every hour over 9 hours a day or 48 hours a week. The Punjab Labour Code 2026 (s.179) pays two times the normal hourly pay for overtime and for work on the weekly rest day, and three times for work on a public holiday.
How is the hourly rate worked out from a monthly salary?
The laws do not set a formula. This calculator divides the monthly wage by the average hours in a month at 48 hours a week: 48 × 52 ÷ 12 = 208 hours. On Rs 52,000 that is Rs 250 an hour, so overtime is Rs 500 an hour. If your contract uses another basis, enter its hours per month.
What are the normal working hours?
Under the Punjab Labour Code, 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week (9 a day or 50 a week in a seasonal establishment). Under the Factories Act 1934 and the Sindh Factories Act, an adult factory worker may work up to 9 hours a day and 48 hours a week (50 in a seasonal factory).
How much overtime can my employer ask for?
In Punjab, overtime needs your agreement and may not exceed 2 hours a day or 8 hours a week. A five-day workplace may, with the Chief Inspector’s approval, have you work up to 10 hours a day without overtime pay as long as the week stays within 48 hours.
Does this apply to shops, offices and government jobs?
The Punjab Labour Code covers almost all workplaces in Punjab except civil servants, the armed forces and police. The Factories Act 1934 and the Sindh Factories Act cover factories only; shops and offices come under separate shops and establishments laws not covered here, and government employees follow their own service rules.
