How it is worked out
- Annual salary: Rs 400,000 × 12 = Rs 4,800,000
- Tax on this slab: Rs 541,000 + 29% × (Rs 4,800,000 − Rs 4,100,000) = Rs 744,000
- Monthly take-home: (Rs 4,800,000 − Rs 744,000) ÷ 12 = Rs 338,000
- Monthly tax: Rs 744,000 ÷ 12 = Rs 62,000
What this means for you
Tax is worked out on the year’s salary, not the month’s. Rs 4,800,000 a year falls in the slab from Rs 4,100,000 to Rs 5,600,000, where the tax is Rs 541,000 plus 29% of the amount above Rs 4,100,000. Your employer deducts one twelfth of that each month. Overall it is 15.5% of your salary, even though the rate on your last rupee is 29%.
In 2025-26 the same salary paid Rs 71,750 a month, so the 2026-27 budget saves you Rs 9,750 a month, or Rs 117,000 a year. The rate on this slab fell from 35% to 29%.
You stay in this slab until your salary passes Rs 466,667 a month (Rs 5,600,000 a year). Above that, 32% applies, but only to the part above the line, so a raise always increases your take-home pay. If part of your pay is an exempt allowance, enter only the taxable salary in the calculator.
