How it is worked out
- Annual salary: Rs 500,000 × 12 = Rs 6,000,000
- Tax on this slab: Rs 976,000 + 32% × (Rs 6,000,000 − Rs 5,600,000) = Rs 1,104,000
- Monthly take-home: (Rs 6,000,000 − Rs 1,104,000) ÷ 12 = Rs 408,000
- Monthly tax: Rs 1,104,000 ÷ 12 = Rs 92,000
What this means for you
Tax is worked out on the year’s salary, not the month’s. Rs 6,000,000 a year falls in the slab from Rs 5,600,000 to Rs 7,000,000, where the tax is Rs 976,000 plus 32% of the amount above Rs 5,600,000. Your employer deducts one twelfth of that each month. Overall it is 18.4% of your salary, even though the rate on your last rupee is 32%.
In 2025-26 the same salary paid Rs 106,750 a month, so the 2026-27 budget saves you Rs 14,750 a month, or Rs 177,000 a year. The budget lowered the rates on the upper slabs and split the old top slab.
You stay in this slab until your salary passes Rs 583,333 a month (Rs 7,000,000 a year). Above that, 35% applies, but only to the part above the line, so a raise always increases your take-home pay. If part of your pay is an exempt allowance, enter only the taxable salary in the calculator.
