How it is worked out
- Annual salary: Rs 300,000 × 12 = Rs 3,600,000
- Tax on this slab: Rs 316,000 + 25% × (Rs 3,600,000 − Rs 3,200,000) = Rs 416,000
- Monthly take-home: (Rs 3,600,000 − Rs 416,000) ÷ 12 = Rs 265,333
- Monthly tax: Rs 416,000 ÷ 12 = Rs 34,667
What this means for you
Tax is worked out on the year’s salary, not the month’s. Rs 3,600,000 a year falls in the slab from Rs 3,200,000 to Rs 4,100,000, where the tax is Rs 316,000 plus 25% of the amount above Rs 3,200,000. Your employer deducts one twelfth of that each month. Overall it is 11.56% of your salary, even though the rate on your last rupee is 25%.
In 2025-26 the same salary paid Rs 38,833 a month, so the 2026-27 budget saves you Rs 4,167 a month, or Rs 50,000 a year. The rate on this slab fell from 30% to 25%.
You stay in this slab until your salary passes Rs 341,667 a month (Rs 4,100,000 a year). Above that, 29% applies, but only to the part above the line, so a raise always increases your take-home pay. If part of your pay is an exempt allowance, enter only the taxable salary in the calculator.
