How it is calculated

  1. Equivalent value = amount × (CPI in the target year ÷ CPI in the starting year).
  2. Total inflation = CPI in the later year ÷ CPI in the earlier year − 1.
  3. Average yearly inflation = (1 + total inflation)^(1 ÷ years) − 1.

Example: Rs 1,000 from FY2009-10

CPI, FY2009-1063.22
CPI, FY2025-26282.62
Ratio282.62 ÷ 63.22 = 4.4704
Equivalent value1,000 × 4.4704 = Rs 4,470

Base 2015-16 = 100. Years before FY2015-16 are linked from the old base and cover urban prices only. The FY2026-27 rate compares July to September 2026 with the whole of the previous year.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CPI?

The consumer price index tracks the price of a fixed basket of goods and services that households buy: food, rent, electricity, gas, transport, clothing, education, health and more. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) prices it every month in 35 cities and 27 rural centres. The national index combines the urban and rural indices, with 2015-16 = 100. If the index goes from 100 to 280, the same basket costs 2.8 times as much.

Why fiscal years and not calendar years?

Pakistan’s government, PBS and the State Bank all report annual inflation by fiscal year, July to June, so “FY2025-26” means July 2025 to June 2026. Each year here is the average of its twelve monthly indices. That is why the yearly figure differs from the year-on-year rate quoted for a single month, such as June.

Why does my own inflation feel higher (or lower)?

The CPI is an average household’s basket. If you spend more than average on electricity, rent, school fees or medicines, and those rose faster, your personal inflation is higher than the CPI; if you mainly buy goods whose prices fell, it is lower. Use the result as a fair yardstick, not an exact measure of your own costs.

Did my salary raise beat inflation?

Convert your old salary to today’s rupees and compare it with what you earn now. If Rs 50,000 in FY2014-15 is worth about Rs 145,351 in FY2025-26, a salary below that has lost buying power, even if it went up in rupees. A raise only beats inflation when it is bigger than the CPI rise over the same years.

Where do these figures come from?

FY2016-17 onwards: PBS national CPI (2015-16 = 100), monthly indices averaged over each July-June year. FY2007-08 to FY2015-16: the PBS urban CPI on its old 2007-08 base, linked to the new base at FY2015-16 (old index 203.82 = 100), since PBS publishes no official link factor. FY2000-01 to FY2006-07: chained back with PBS’s published annual inflation rates (Pakistan Economic Survey 2014-15). Checked against the State Bank’s annual inflation figures.
