How it is worked out
- Gold value = 5 × 431,536 = Rs 2,157,680
- Nisab (52.5 tola silver) = 52.5 × 6,086 = Rs 319,515
- Zakat at 2.5% = 2.5% × 2,157,680 = Rs 53,942
What this means for you
Whether it is due depends on what else you own. If these 5 tola are your only zakatable wealth, they are below the gold nisab of 7.5 tola and no zakat is due on them. If you also have any cash, savings or silver, the silver nisab of 52.5 tola (Rs 319,515 today) applies to everything together; 5 tola alone already exceeds it, so the zakat above is due.
The Sarafa rate is for pure 24K gold. Most jewellery is 22K or 21K, and zakat is on the gold it contains: on 5 tola of 22K it is Rs 49,447 and on 21K Rs 47,199. Stones and making charges are not counted. In the Hanafi school, followed by most Pakistanis, jewellery you wear is also zakatable.
Use the rate on the day you pay: gold prices change every working day, and every Rs 1,000 change in the tola rate changes this zakat by Rs 125. If you owe a debt that is due now, deduct it before working out zakat.
