How it is worked out
- Annual salary: Rs 125,000 × 12 = Rs 1,500,000
- Tax on this slab: Rs 6,000 + 11% × (Rs 1,500,000 − Rs 1,200,000) = Rs 39,000
- Monthly take-home: (Rs 1,500,000 − Rs 39,000) ÷ 12 = Rs 121,750
- Monthly tax: Rs 39,000 ÷ 12 = Rs 3,250
What this means for you
Tax is worked out on the year’s salary, not the month’s. Rs 1,500,000 a year falls in the slab from Rs 1,200,000 to Rs 2,200,000, where the tax is Rs 6,000 plus 11% of the amount above Rs 1,200,000. Your employer deducts one twelfth of that each month. Overall it is 2.6% of your salary, even though the rate on your last rupee is 11%.
This is the same as in 2025-26: the 2026-27 budget left the 11% slab unchanged. Its rate cuts start at Rs 2,200,000 a year (Rs 183,333 a month).
You stay in this slab until your salary passes Rs 183,333 a month (Rs 2,200,000 a year). Above that, 20% applies, but only to the part above the line, so a raise always increases your take-home pay. If part of your pay is an exempt allowance, enter only the taxable salary in the calculator.
