How it is worked out
- Value in rupees: $1,200 × Rs 276.85 = Rs 332,220
- Customs duty + regulatory duty (fixed for this price): Rs 250 + Rs 17,600 = Rs 17,850
- Sales tax on the value plus duties: 25% × (Rs 332,220 + Rs 250 + Rs 17,600) = Rs 87,518
- Income tax: not charged on a passport
- Mobile handset levy (fixed for this price): Rs 16,000
- Total PTA tax: Rs 250 + Rs 17,600 + Rs 87,518 + Rs 16,000 = Rs 121,368
What this means for you
The gap of Rs 11,500 is income tax. It is not charged on a phone brought in personal baggage and registered on a passport, but it is on a CNIC, and it doubles to Rs 23,000 if you are not on the Active Taxpayers’ List (Rs 144,368 in all). On a passport the phone has to be registered within 60 days of arrival.
Customs duty, regulatory duty, income tax and the handset levy are fixed amounts set by price band. Sales tax is a percentage of the rupee value plus duties: 18% up to US$500 and 25% above. At US$1,200, sales tax alone is Rs 87,518.
The dollar value is the customs value FBR assigns to your model, which can differ from what you paid. We converted it at the SBP interbank rate of 22 October 2026 (Rs 276.85 per US$); customs uses its own notified rate, so the amount on your payment slip (PSID) can differ slightly.
